Mommyhood: An Unexpected Blessing

LEARNING THAT I'M PREGNANT
My then boyfriend (now husband) and I have been together for six long years. We knew that marriage is just around the corner but had no plans of doing it sooner than expected. Our lives changed in an instant when two lines appeared on that small white rectangular tester. It dawned on me that I am not ready to raise a kid yet! I had a great carreer and was foresighting a promotion.  For a couple of days, I was praying and hoping that the tester was defective and did not yield correct results. My apprehensions grew stronger as the doctor confirmed that I was indeed seven weeks and two days pregnant on July 18, 2012. Can you blame me? I was 23 and, for goodness sake(!), single!

SNAPPING OUT OF REALITY
Hoookay! So I'm pregnant, huh? I honestly didn't know what to feel, what to do and what to expect. As an only child in the family, I did not have the slightest idea on how to take care of a child. As a matter of fact, I never liked kids. I judge stupid kids. I judge parents. One thing I was sure of is that I needed help, that I needed friends and family. I am thankful for having a partner who stood by me when I was confused like jells. Realising that this one's for real, I started talking to mommy friends and reading online articles ralated to motherhood.

FROM A CARELESS INDIVIDUAL TO A MOM
Before learning I was pregnant, I am the definition of a happy-go-lucky, carreer oriented woman. Anything goes! Approving things without thinking. Leaving without planning. Waking up somewhere else. I liked the freedom of earning my own money and splurging it overnight. Who cares? I'm single and my parents have their own source income. Everything turned upside down when I heard my baby's heartbeat for the first time. I had to give up my job as it was causing too much stress. I devoted most of my time researching for modern ways on raising a child. I felt the burden of being a good mom, to live up to the expectations of the society on how you should conduct yourself as a mother. My cursing toned down. Hehe! Being a first time mom is scary, it's my toughest challenge to date! But remember that a good support system can go a long way. My mommy friends from Avenue for Mommies Online (AMO) helped me become confident and believe in my momtuition. It was indeed unexpected but turned out it was just the beginning of the best things that happened in my life.

I think first-time moms like us tend to feel that way. I remember when N was born, I was too scared to give her a bath. It was Daddy T who did if first. Her stomp freaked me out! I was so OA in putting alchohol in cleaning it since the pedia told us to be very careful on it to avoid infection.

Motherhood is really best traveled with friends who are moms. Just like you, I'm thankful for having friends around to support my "modern" and "informed" choices, LOL! :)
